Episode 28 – Eyes Without A Face

Episode 28 – Eyes Without A Face (right click to download)

“Beauty, like supreme dominion Is but supported by opinion”.

Ben Franklin was right. Take SATAN MADE ME DO IT: a celebration of the beauty of ugliness. Most people look away in disgust. They sure as hell cover their ears in pain. Not us. “Ugliness is the measure of imperfection”, said HG Wells. Well, we embrace it. We love it. Most of all, we cherish the imperfections. So, is SATAN MADE ME DO IT so far apart from, say, Christianity? The Cross is surely not “beautiful” and Christ was surely not “perfect”.

We said it before: SATAN MADE ME DO IT is a lot like life. Sometimes you have your way, other times you get kicked in the genitals with the strength of a thousand hooves before you can even say “UGH!”. Life is not perfect, life is not conventional and life is ugly. So if you’re into life there’s something right here for you. LIVE IT LOUD! Click for show notes and a complete tracklist.

We can’t stand for painless, tamed, sugary or trouble-free music for much too long, so here we are, back with a stronger drive than ever – just as promised. This one is mostly Death and Black and will sound like a rusty metal amalgam crushing on a thick flesh wall. DEATH IS FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF SOUND! Only counts if your ears bleed!

We will back on Friday the 13th, no less! SUPPORT SATAN MADE ME DO IT: SPREAD THE DISEASE!

Episode 21 – From Out Of The Swamp

Episode 21 – From Out Of The Swamp (right click to download)

This one is the most 90s black metal episode we’ve done so far, but in truth there really isn’t that much black metal in it. Well, ok, there’s plenty of it, but maybe not in the way you expect? You’ll be the judge and we’ll be the case, how ‘bout that? All we can say is that it came out naturally, and that is a good thing.

Nature and ambience are the two main keywords here, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that this is a rhythm-free episode. Best heard during night-time this one. Keep your beverage of choice at hand for the best results.

And PLAY IT LOUD goddammit! Don’t be afraid to feel like crap while listening to this. It can be devastating at times, but you’ll feel hellagood by the end of it all.

Episode 20 – Don’t Deliver Us From Evil

Episode 20 – Don’t Deliver Us From Evil (right click to download)

It all comes down to a matter of temperature, doesn’t it? In the last episode we ventured through a different kind of metal, colder and machinelike in nature. It was tremendous. But this time, as the leaves start dying and the rain pours outside, we feel the need to return to a warmer and more organic brand of metal, the kind of metal that makes you feel fuzzy inside. Or maybe it’s the rum talking. For that purpose, nothing better than going back to the roots. This one is mainly NWOBHM and early doom inspired.

So fall down to your knees and beg:

Our Father in hell,
Damned be your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth, as it is in hell.
And lead us into temptation,
And never deliver us from evil.

PRAY IT LOUD!

Episode 19 – Metal On Metal

Episode 19 – Metal On Metal (right click to download)

There’s basically no Metal on this episode.

There, we said it. There’s even a little clubbing thing going around. EBM stuff. Noise rock. Yeah, we can almost hear you: these guys are selling out! What about the “no plastic, no triggers” statement stuff? Yeah, we’re selling out. We don’t have anything to sell, or anyone to sell it to, but nevertheless we’re selling it. Because this is the way of the new world we’re living in, and selling out is the new keeping it real. And you will buy it.

You may be shocked. And you should be. Because this little baby is a real monster. The way we did it was simple. We were flying to Madrid, listening to “Metal on Metal”. Not the Anvil song. The one by Kraftwerk. Boring flight, nothing to do… And we wondered: what would happen if we started the next episode with this great song?

That’s how this is gonna roll. Kraftwerk will start playing within your ears. It will sound strange and perverted. And then something fucked up and evil will happen. And then… you’re just going to have to listen to it, won’t you? We can just promise you: in the end, everything will make sense, and you will just hit replay.

SELL IT LOUD!

Episode 18 – Tales Of The Macabre

Episode 18 – Tales Of The Macabre (right click to download)

We’ve never done a thrash heavy SATAN MADE ME DO IT episode, believe it or not. It’s fucking crazy now that we think about it, since it’s well documented how thrash is metal’s core genre. Sure, there’s plenty of it in most of our episodes, but looking back at it we still feel we lack a more thrash oriented 45 minute tracklist. That has to do with the fact that we like to keep things freestyle, but also with our special knack for black and death flavors.

An amateur’s mistake, we’re afraid to say, but one we promptly fix with this TALES OF THE MACABRE episode (a reference to the Slaughter track of course). STILL! This is us. There’s some other stuff thrown in there for good measure. Some death, some heavy. It’s all good fun.

We tried to be as less obvious as possible while still throwing a bone or four your way just so it’s not all name dropping.

Your duty, as always, is to PLAY IT LOUD! The rest will naturally fall into place. SHOW NO MERCY!

Episode 17 – The Moon Shone With a Fuller Red

Episode 17 – The Moon Shone With a Fuller Red (right click to download)

Last time we dug graves deep in bottom of the ocean. This time we whisper our sorcery to invoke the reddest of moons. The bloodiest one we can possibly conjure. The kind of moon that rouses that which should not be. For while there’s a devastating beauty in losing yourself in thoughts and feelings under such a celestial body, do not be fooled: there’s nothing blue about this moon.

Episode 16 – Graves in the Water

Episode 16 – Graves in the Water (right click to download)

Ocean waves may scare you, crashing wildly and loudly into the shore, making you lose your balance, pounding you uncontrollably into the sandy bottom. But as powerful as the roaring waves are, you know that the greatest danger, the scariest violence, the hungriest of deaths, lays down deep below the surface. There’s a sense of menace when you look at the vastness of the deep-sea; it’s what you don’t know, what you can’t predict and control that terrifies the most.

Such is life. There’s nothing more frightening that what lies under the surface, in the abyss, masquerading as the ordinary, lying there under the ripples of everyday life and everyday people. Remember this when listening this week’s episode. And trust us, it’s gonna be much easier on you if you just PLAY IT LOUD!

Episode 15 – The Dead All Have The Same Skin

Episode 15 – The Dead All Have The Same Skin (right click to download)

This will sound like nothing you have ever listened to on a SATAN MADE ME DO IT episode. Basically at some point, after starting to develop an interest in country music, we noticed that country and metal approaches shared some similarities. After we came to listen to some of the stuff Hank Williams 3 was doing, crossing over country with metal and hardcore punk (he’s the self crowned “King of Hellbilly”), we felt curious and decided to find out if more interesting stuff was being done on this field. Well, to make a long story short, there is not a lot of stuff being done. Mainly, there is not a lot of GOOD stuff being done. Either because they’re gimmicky, not very talented or just because, beyond the Southern Rock that’s already been there for decades, the Christian fundamentalism of America’s Bible Belt could never really get in bed with the soundtrack to Hell, but that’s the truth.

We decided to go through with this anyway, and actually we like the result. This is not strictly “country”. Expect to find anything that sounds a bit western, a bit outlaw, a bit redneck and very… white. Expect also to find a lot of stand-alone side-projects and a lot of references to Hank Williams 3 (son of country legends Hank Williams Sr. and Hank Williams Jr. and a country star himself, albeit an unconventional one). As for SATAN MADE ME DO IT, we will consider this episode as some sort of a side-project too. So don’t worry: on October 3rd we’ll be back with more GRUESOME METAL!

Anyway…

PLAY IT LOUD!

Episode 13 – Santa Sangre

Episode 13 – Santa Sangre (right click to download)

This time we’re going south of the border. The rules were simple: our selection could only include bands bellow the U.S.-Mexico line. It’s a pure geographical criterion. So don’t expect to listen to Slayer just because Tom Araya is from Chile and Dave Lombardo is Cuban, the same way bands like Xibalba (from Los Angeles) don’t make it only because they happen to sing in Spanish.

We tell you what to expect. Expect some of the most brutal metal created anywhere in the world. These are not bands that learned about violence because they happened to pick up some tapes and stories from Norwegian Black Metal or because they’re big horror movies buffs. A lot of these people grew up wrapped up in real poverty and hostility. Sure, most of them, especially the earlier guys, are unmistakably influenced by whatever they were listening to at the time, and that meant metal from the States and from Europe. But there’s a crudeness and (as with many other music genres from the Latin countries of the Americas) a political and social awareness lacking in many of their contemporary outfits across the US border and across the Atlantic.

The hardest part was choosing just a dozen bands from such a loaded vein. The Belo Horizonte scene alone – as rich and vital as the Bay Area or Teutonic thrash metal scenes – could justify a whole episode and don’t get us started about what’s going on in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile or Argentina. And we didn’t even touch all the hardcore punk stuff.

Anyway, we’ll have to come back. For now, we won’t keep you waiting. Metal, Muerte, Destrucción! TOQUEM BEM ALTO, CARALHO!
