Episode 15 – The Dead All Have The Same Skin

Episode 15 – The Dead All Have The Same Skin (right click to download)

This will sound like nothing you have ever listened to on a SATAN MADE ME DO IT episode. Basically at some point, after starting to develop an interest in country music, we noticed that country and metal approaches shared some similarities. After we came to listen to some of the stuff Hank Williams 3 was doing, crossing over country with metal and hardcore punk (he’s the self crowned “King of Hellbilly”), we felt curious and decided to find out if more interesting stuff was being done on this field. Well, to make a long story short, there is not a lot of stuff being done. Mainly, there is not a lot of GOOD stuff being done. Either because they’re gimmicky, not very talented or just because, beyond the Southern Rock that’s already been there for decades, the Christian fundamentalism of America’s Bible Belt could never really get in bed with the soundtrack to Hell, but that’s the truth.

We decided to go through with this anyway, and actually we like the result. This is not strictly “country”. Expect to find anything that sounds a bit western, a bit outlaw, a bit redneck and very… white. Expect also to find a lot of stand-alone side-projects and a lot of references to Hank Williams 3 (son of country legends Hank Williams Sr. and Hank Williams Jr. and a country star himself, albeit an unconventional one). As for SATAN MADE ME DO IT, we will consider this episode as some sort of a side-project too. So don’t worry: on October 3rd we’ll be back with more GRUESOME METAL!

Anyway…

Episode 14 – Eternal Summer

Episode 14 – Eternal Summer (right click to download)

Do you like it hot and steamy? Nonsense, of course you do! The songs we went with for this new SATAN MADE ME DO IT episode have one thing in common: warmness. So instead of reverb heavy thin guitar sounds and overall chilly Nordic black metal tracks expect songs so hot they’ll make you sweat like a hairy man in a sauna. That means this is generally a very freestyle episode. There’s thrash as you might have expected, but there’s also proto-metal, heavy metal, power metal and some blackened tunes.

Anything goes! Take you shirt off. Your pants too if you so wish. With SATAN MADE ME DO IT hell will never freeze over.

PLAY IT LOUD, beachgoers and party throwers! Another metalström is scheduled for September 19th.

Episode 13 – Santa Sangre

Episode 13 – Santa Sangre (right click to download)

This time we’re going south of the border. The rules were simple: our selection could only include bands bellow the U.S.-Mexico line. It’s a pure geographical criterion. So don’t expect to listen to Slayer just because Tom Araya is from Chile and Dave Lombardo is Cuban, the same way bands like Xibalba (from Los Angeles) don’t make it only because they happen to sing in Spanish.

We tell you what to expect. Expect some of the most brutal metal created anywhere in the world. These are not bands that learned about violence because they happened to pick up some tapes and stories from Norwegian Black Metal or because they’re big horror movies buffs. A lot of these people grew up wrapped up in real poverty and hostility. Sure, most of them, especially the earlier guys, are unmistakably influenced by whatever they were listening to at the time, and that meant metal from the States and from Europe. But there’s a crudeness and (as with many other music genres from the Latin countries of the Americas) a political and social awareness lacking in many of their contemporary outfits across the US border and across the Atlantic.

The hardest part was choosing just a dozen bands from such a loaded vein. The Belo Horizonte scene alone – as rich and vital as the Bay Area or Teutonic thrash metal scenes – could justify a whole episode and don’t get us started about what’s going on in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile or Argentina. And we didn’t even touch all the hardcore punk stuff.

Anyway, we’ll have to come back. For now, we won’t keep you waiting. Metal, Muerte, Destrucción! TOQUEM BEM ALTO, CARALHO!

Episode 12 – Horror Maximus

Episode 12 – Horror Maximus (right click to download)

Maybe it’s the heat messing up with our brains. We’re not entirely sure. The truth is we probably cooked up the most un-summerish episode possible for the time of the year (in this part of the world, that is). There’s funeral doom, more adequate for those grim winter nights; there’s necro black metal, which reminds us of anything except a relaxing afternoon at the beach… Things get pretty ugly this time around as you can probably guess by now. We had to honor this episode’s title after all. It’s called Horror Maximus, not Horror “Minimus”!

Get you black hood on, draw some inverted pentagrams and scare the hell out of your neighbors. All in the name of good ol’ Satan!

PLAY IT LOUD! More to come on August 22th.

Episode 11 – When Gods Collide

Episode 11 – When Gods Collide (right click to download)

By this point in time you’ve probably got used to expecting a certain track record from SATAN MADE ME DO IT episodes. It’s not hard to tell we are particularly fond of all things crushing, be it thrash, black or death metal. But that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten all about metal’s less “extreme” sounds. We love ‘em… for the most part (get your folk fix somewhere else!). The reason why it took so long to make a heavy/NWOBHM/speed/power metal episode is simple: we just couldn’t make our minds about which bands should be included and which bands should be left out. Still, this ISN’T a be-all, end-all episode, and we’ll do this again eventually for sure. Hell, maybe we’ll transform this “When Gods Collide” title (a reference to the Thor track, of course) as a brand for all things less severe on SATAN MADE ME DO IT. Time shall tell.

Whatever the case may be the rules remain unchanged. Want to hear a SATAN MADE ME DO IT episode? First: Thanks! Second: Crank things up to 11 and PLAY IT LOUD! Going forward new episodes we’ll be published every other Friday. So more to come on the 8th of August.

Episode 10 – Darker than the Swoon of Sin

Episode 10 – Darker than the Swoon of Sin (right click to download)

“Imagine some foul and putrid corpse that has lain rotting and decomposing in the grave, a jelly-like mass of liquid corruption. Imagine such a corpse a prey to flames, devoured by the fire of burning brimstone and giving off dense choking fumes of nauseous loathsome decomposition. And then imagine this sickening stench, multiplied a millionfold and a millionfold again from the millions upon millions of fetid carcasses massed together in the reeking darkness, a huge and rotting human fungus. Imagine all this, and you will have some idea of the horror of the stench of hell”.*

This episode has the stench of rotting human fungus and is dedicated to James Joyce who, we know for a fact, was the biggest Slayer fan.

PLAY IT LOUD! We’ll be back with more sonic corruption on July 22nd.

Episode 9 – Worm Eaters

Episode 9 – Worm Eaters (right click to download)

We came to this episode with no preconceived idea or particular direction discussed at the outset – except for what the first track would be. The result, we like to think, feels very much like a live set, probably more so than any other episode so far (by the way, feel free to hire us to DJ at your birthday party or wedding, christening and bar mitzvah ceremonies). Which means there is a lot of free flowing raw energy and a general sense of in-your-face metal. You can almost smell the stench of sweat and beer invading your nostrils. This is a GOOD thing! A bit more thrashy too this one. So move away the furniture at home and prepare to SLAM IT LOUD (no helicoptering  or windmilling or whatever stupid kids are doing these days)!

We’ll be back with a vengeance on July 8th. Go watch your “Death Wish” DVDs and be prepared.

Episode 8: It’s All Gone Weird

Episode 8 – It’s All Gone Weird (right click to download)

“Like howling dogs I sing.” We went ahead and spoke to darkness to conjure up this one. That doesn’t mean this is a particularly crushing SATAN MADE ME DO IT episode; it’s just the weirdest sounding one we ever did. It was a conscious decision. And honestly, we are in love with the end result.

This episode is as freestyle as it gets. There’s black metal, industrial, hardcore, grind and old stuff that is *still* ahead of time. You’re not afraid of a little experimentation, are you? We don’t want this relationship to become stale…

PLAY IT LOUD! Kick and scream. Break a dish or two if you have to. This is only the beginning.

Episode 7 – Demon Lover

Episode 7 – Demon Lover (right click to download)

An aching heart. Pretty much everyone knows the feel, but when it strikes us harder it’s as if nobody but us really knows just how it feels. Love truly is a funny thing. It can fill you with butterflies, itch where it tickles the most and blind you silly. And it can beat you to your knees and keep you down for as long as you allow it. This Satan Made Me Do It episode takes you on that special trip where emotions run wild and reason sits on the bench.

There’s something for everybody: a little hope, a little despair, a little peace and a little hell. Alas, when the demon knocks at your door there’s no knowing what’s in store for you.

Listen to this one as one should love: LOUD! We’ll be back, guns blazing, on June 10th.

Episode 6 – The Devil Rides Out (right click to download)

Well, nobody can accuse us of not being Metal enough. Last episode we had nails all over, now we have Hammers, Axes and even Bulldozers. Ready to drill and maim, YEAH!

Behind all the mentioned utilities is a set of quite diverse songs which runs heavier and atmospheric styles such as Doom and Black, more energetic crusty tracks and even manages to revisit some much-loved classics.

We’re keeping this intro short because there’s no time to lose. Press “play” and PLAY IT LOUD! More terrifying stuff is crawling from beyond the grave on May 27th.
